Blogging Roots, In Retrospect

When I caught the blogging bug way back in 2004, I had nobody to talk to. Blogging became my therapy, at a time when my heart and mind were in turmoil and I was in my, should we just say, lowest of lows. But sending out your honest thoughts randomly out in the worldwide web without knowing who might read them brought me some kind of comfort; and in the process unloaded the burden somehow.

Then writing online became a source of income, and I swear, it had its rewards! But some good things never last I suppose, the US economy crashed years later and Google changed its algorithm affecting page rankings. Eventually, all that brought the blogging moolah into an all time low. The rest, as they say, is now history. Since then, like some of my blogging contemporaries, we've all went back to the 'day job' and actually found legit writing and editing jobs.

Today, while young folks (the millennials) are caught up in a world of social networking, sending their random thoughts to the universe about practically any topic under the sun (and having their own opinion about everything!), I can't help but be reminded that we did that too. But we had our own URL to do so, and excuse me for saying, which made the whole exercise much more profound.

At one point when I was looking for a day job, I wasn't hired as a medical editor, because I was just a medical blogger. That experience, the interviewer hinted, didn't count. What's with the labels anyway? Only the platform or medium is different, we should all be weighed by our skills, qualifications and most importantly, the quality of writing that we produce.

My old blog is gone now, I wish I compiled each blog post I've written and published. But then things happen for a reason, and there are stuff I've written back then that I might regret today. Then why am I blogging (again) right now? Because I sometimes get fed up with posting photos on IG and FB. I feel that there are more substantial stories behind each photo and I think they should be told. Also, recently I found myself with lots of thoughts and ideas and an FB post is just not enough. I need to write them somewhere. So here goes...

So, wherever this new blogging life leads, I can't wait to find out...
